Class 2: The Novice Equitation Class. Open to Adult and Junior rider/horse combinations who have never competed in a Side Saddle Equitation Championship Class at the SSA National Show. A short simple show will be required. Habits need not be worn and horses may be shared (Qualifying Points for Equitation Championship classes at the SSA National Show are not awarded in this class).

Class 3 The Right Shoulder Back Novice Freestyle Training Class. Open to novice and experienced to achieve a ‘personal best’ score! Individual shows required in a non- dressage arena for up to 3 1/2 minutes. Walk, trot and canter must be shown on both reins. Rosettes will be given straight after your performance along with feed- back from the judge. Habits need not be worn. Turnout may be checked, if requested.

Class 4 The Side Saddle Association Equitation Championships Open Qualifying Class Run under SSA rules defined in the current Members’ Handbook Open to SSA Members and Non-Members. Members carrying their current Championship Points Cards are eligible for SSA rosettes to 3rd Adult and 3rd Junior places and SSA Championship Points. Southernden Side Saddles sponsor a rosette to the highest placed Member aged under 14 on 1st January of the current year. A rosette sponsored in memory of The Late Mr R Philpot is offered to the Adult Member and Just So Elegant Side Saddle Hire sponsor a rosette for the Junior Member, judged to be the best turned out. The highest placed rider aged 45 years or over receives a Special rosette kindly sponsored in memory of the Late Constance, Lady Bayliss

Best Side Saddle Horse/ Pony

Class 6 Novice Side Saddle Costume Concours d’ Elegance The sole criterion for this class is the elegance of the picture presented by horse/pony and rider, and the way of going of the horse/pony. Safe tack must be used. Fancy dress is not permitted. Competitors are required to walk and trot. A short show is required in which canter is optional. As this is a Novice Show safety hats to current safety standards or above must be worn.

Novice Training Show - Sunday 29th March 2026 (10am start)

To be held at The Knights of Middle England, Guy Cliffe, Coventry Rd, Warwick, CV34 5YD

Incorporating the Roger Philpot Memorial Novice Championship.

 

This is a Show designed for the Novice rider where help and advice will be given, with a chance to gain Equitation qualifying points for the more established rider. Habits need not be worn in Class 1 and 3, but smart competition dress code should be used where habits are not worn. Horses/ponies may be shared in classes 1, 2, 3, and 5.

Safety hats to current safety standards or above must be worn whilst mounted by all Junior and Adult competitors at all times. No exceptions.

Class 1 The Walk and Trot Class.

Open to 1 st and 2 nd placed riders in classes 1 and 2.The Champion receives the Roger Philpot Memorial Sash. Rosettes to Champion and Reserve.

There will be a 15 minute break before Class 5 to allow competitors who are in Class 5 to change.

Class 6 Novice Side Saddle Costume Concours d’ Elegance

The sole criterion for this class is the elegance of the picture presented by horse/pony and rider, and the way of going of the horse/pony. Safe tack must be used. . Detailed inspection of the rider’s period costume is not require Fancy dress is not permitted. Competitors are required to walk and trot. A short show is required in which canter is optional. As this is a Novice Show safety hats to current safety standards or above must be worn.

Class 7 The Champagne Challenge Entry fee £6

This will be run as one class but will have a walk, trot section for new members/novice riders. All others will canter on both reins. The winner will receive a bottle of bubbles in memory of the Late Constance, Lady Bayliss.

Entry Fees: Members £12.00 per class, Non-Members £15.00. Late entries accepted with £2 fee.
 

Prize Information


Rosettes

Area 5 Rosettes to sixth place in all classes apart from Class 3 when all competitors receive

special rosettes.

Special rosettes to all Juniors who have not competed side saddle before.

Area 5 Show Points Awards

To the Adult and Junior Area 5 Member of the SSA gaining the most points in the current year at

the Area 5 Novice Training Show, Area 5 Spring Show at the H.O.P.E Show tbc, Area 5 Summer

Show with Atherstone & District R.C. Show and the Area 5 Autumn Show, on the same

horse/pony.

Points will be awarded as follows:

6 points for first place, 5 points for second place and so on down to1 point for sixth place.

To be presented at the Area 5 On-foot Rally 2027.

 

Terms & Conditions

RULES

1. All classes shall be ridden side saddle UNDER SSA RULES, SEE CURRENT HANDBOOK

2. Classes may be divided for the purposes of preliminary judging if numbers require.

3. Judges’ decisions are final.

4. Entries close 22nd March.

LATE ENTRIES will be accepted if classes are not already full, at an additional cost of £2.00

each.

5. The organisers reserve the right to refuse entry and to alter, amalgamate or cancel classes

6. No dogs allowed

7. There will be no ambulance in attendance although there will be trained First Aiders on the

showground.

8. All competitors and those in attendance are reminded of their individual responsibilities with

regard to Health & Safety, not only to themselves but others on the show ground. This

responsibility extends to safe parking of vehicles and management of horses/ponies.

9. No responsibility will be accepted by SSA Area 5 or KOME for any accident howsoever it is

caused.

10. FALLS: A fall of horse/pony or rider in any class run under Side Saddle Association rules will

result in disqualification, and the rider must leave the ring dismounted. It is strongly

recommended that medical advice is then sought before competing in any other class.
