Novice Training Show - Sunday 29th March 2026 (10am start)

Incorporating the Roger Philpot Memorial Novice Championship.
This is a Show designed for the Novice rider where help and advice will be given, with a chance to gain Equitation qualifying points for the more established rider. Habits need not be worn in Class 1 and 3, but smart competition dress code should be used where habits are not worn. Horses/ponies may be shared in classes 1, 2, 3, and 5.
Safety hats to current safety standards or above must be worn whilst mounted by all Junior and Adult competitors at all times. No exceptions.
Entry per class - SSA Members £12.00 Non-Members £15.00 Champagne Challenge £6.00
Class 1 The Walk and Trot Class.
Walk, Trot Equitation. No canter in ‘go round’ or ‘individual show’ required. Designed for new and less experienced members.Habits need not be worn.
Entrants to this class may enter Classes 3,5 & 6 but may not enter Classes 2 or 4
Class 2 – The Novice Equitation Class
Open to Adult and Junior rider/horse combinations who have never competed in a Side Saddle Equitation Championship Class at the SSA National Show. A short simple show will be required. Habits need not be worn and horses may be shared (Qualifying Points for Equitation Championship classes at the SSA National Show are not awarded in this class).
Novice Championship.
Open to 1 st and 2 nd placed riders in classes 1 and 2.The Champion receives the Roger Philpot Memorial Sash. Rosettes to Champion and Reserve.
Class 3 The Right Shoulder Back Novice Freestyle Training Class.
Open to novice and experienced riders to achieve a ‘personal best’ score! Individual shows required in a non- dressage arena for up to 3 1/2 minutes. Walk, trot and canter must be shown on both reins. Rosettes will be given straight after your performance along with feed- back from the judge. Habits need not be worn. Turnout may be checked, if requested.
Class 4 The Side Saddle Association Equitation Championships
Open Qualifying Class. Run under SSA rules defined in the current Members’ Handbook. Open to SSA Members and Non-Members. Members carrying their current Championship Points Cards are eligible for SSA rosettes to 3rd Adult and 3rd Junior places and SSA Championship Points. Southernden Side Saddles sponsor a rosette to the highest placed Member aged under 14 on 1st January of the current year. A rosette sponsored in memory of The Late Mr. R Philpot is offered to the Adult Member and Just So Elegant Side Saddle Hire sponsor a rosette for the Junior Member,including lead rein riders, judged to be the best turned out.The highest placed rider aged 45 years or over receives a Special rosette kindly sponsored in memory of the Late Constance, Lady Bayliss.
Class 5 Best Horse or Pony ridden Side Saddle
Open to horses or ponies. This class will be judged on the harmony, manners and way of going. Lead rein riders are eligible for this class. Leaders must be correctly dressed.
There will be a 15 minute break before Class 5 to allow competitors who are in Class 5 to change.
Class 6 Novice Side Saddle Costume Concours d’ Elegance
The sole criterion for this class is the elegance of the picture presented by horse/pony and rider, and the way of going of the horse/pony. Safe tack must be used. . Detailed inspection of the rider’s period costume is not require Fancy dress is not permitted. Competitors are required to walk and trot. A short show is required in which canter is optional. As this is a Novice Show safety hats to current safety standards or above must be worn.
Class 7 The Champagne Challenge Entry fee £6
This will be run as one class but will have a walk, trot section for new members/novice riders. All others will canter on both reins. The winner will receive a bottle of bubbles in memory of the Late Constance, Lady Bayliss.
