Jumping Competition Guidance
Optimum Time – The optimum time is calculated by the judge for each class on the basis of following the best route from jump to jump at a sensible and safe pace. The competitor closest to the optimum time wins the class. The optimum time is not divulged to the competitors before or during the class.
Single phase classes - Jump the first half of the course and then proceed directly to the timed ‘jump - off’ section of the course. Placings decided on faults throughout the whole course and time in the ‘jump-off’ section.
Horse and Hound Classes - Jump a small course of fences on your pony and then run and jump around the course with your hound.
Hobby Horse Grand National - A steeple chase race over very small fences, first hobby horse and rider through the finish wins.
Note no upper age limit in last section! Prizes for all who cross the finish line.
Battle of the riding Schools Hobby Horse race - enter relay teams of 4 to complete the hobby horse course. First team home wins!

Whip Rules
Please be aware that the specifications for whips for show jumping and cross-country have changed for all Pony Club competitions – basically you can only use the same whip as for British Show jumping (so if you have one that you use for BS, then that is fine – any other whip is NOT allowed).
Riders may not hit their horse/ pony before the start of the course and may be eliminated for doing so at the Judge’s discretion.
A whip, if carried, must be held in the hand by the handle with the handle at the top.
The whip must be “padded” and comply with the current British Showjumping rule (BS Members Handbook, full wording is available to view online at www.britishshowjumping.co.uk).
The key points of that rule are as follows:
· The maximum length of the “Whip” is 70cm and must be no less than 45cm.
· The “Contact area”, is considered to be 2/5’s (two fifths) of the overall length of the “Whip” and must be covered with a “Pad”. There must be no “binding” within 17 centimeters of the end of the “Pad”.
· The “Pad” must be smooth, with no protrusion or raised surface, and be made of shock absorbing material throughout its circumference such that it gives a compression factor of at least 6mm.
Excessive use of a whip will not be tolerated and will result in elimination.
Stirrup Ruling
Stirrups should be of the correct size to suit the rider’s boots. They must have 7mm (1⁄4”) clearance on either side of the boot. To take this measurement, tack checkers should move the foot across to one side of the stirrup, with the widest part of the foot on the tread. From the side of the foot to the edge of the stirrup should be 14mm.
There are now many types of stirrups marketed as ‘safety stirrups’. All riders must ensure that their stirrups are suitable for their type of footwear, the activities in which they take part and that the stirrup leathers are in good condition.
There are no prescribed weight limits on metal stirrups, however manufacturers of stirrups made of other materials may apply weight limits to their stirrups. Any person buying these stirrups, should take particular notice of weight limits details on the box or attached information leaflets.
Neither the feet, stirrup leathers or irons may be attached to the girth, nor the feet attached to the stirrup irons.
All stirrups must be capable of easy releasing.
Examples of stirrups that are prohibited, are any with enhanced grip features on stirrup treads, such as deep grooves or rivets, or interlocking boots for the rider. For the avoidance of doubt, magnetic stirrups are not allowed at Pony Club events.
