General Information
JUNIOR RIDERS aged 16 years and under should provide themselves with a RED ARMBAND to be always worn so they can be
easily identified. The show organisers should be made aware of rider/handlers age at time of entry. The highest placed junior
rider, in classes that do not have a junior section will receive Best Junior Rosette.
YOUNG RIDERS aged 17 to 21 years old should provide themselves with a WHITE ARMBAND to be worn in all ridden classes so
they can easily be identified. The show organisers should be made aware of rider/handlers age at time of entry. The highest
placed young rider, in classes that do not have a young rider section will receive Best Young Rider Rosette.
NB: Competitors age on the dates of the Show determine whether a competitor qualifies as a Junior or Young Rider.
AMATEUR HOME PRODUCED this is for horses that are kept at home, private yard or DIY livery, that are not being prepared
by professional livery or show yards. The owner/rider must not receive any reward from producing, training or breeding. The
horse must not have been to a professional yard for producing, been shown or ridden by a professional during the year of this
show. Weekly lessons are allowed. The rider must wear a GREEN ARMBAND in all ridden showing classes. We trust and rely on
the integrity and goodwill of the exhibitor to adhere to eligibility.
NOVICE HORSE is a horse that has no, or limited experience, in the show ring, and must not have won intermediate
or open ridden classes. If you start the year as a novice and you win at a show within that year, you will still be
allowed in the NOVICE section at this show for that year.
Please notify the show organisers at the time of entry if any of the riders are Junior or Young Rider and if
you qualify for Amateur Home Produced and please remember to wear your armband.
EMERGENCY TELEPHONE NUMBER If you need to leave a contact number for emergencies whilst you are away from
home, there will be a mobile switched on from 7am to 11pm each day. The number is (07371818783). It is NOT
possible to make contact via the showground office.
FIRST AID facilities will be supplied on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of the show. If you require hospital treatment and
do not have a car, please telephone (07971818783) when you are discharged, and a volunteer will collect you.
Advice & Guidelines
Safety
The Society requires us to appoint a Safety Officer. Please make life easier for everyone by thinking about safety at all
times whilst on the showground and respecting any instructions from committee members or staff at Pickering
Grange. The Society has a Safeguarding Officer for any concerns about children and young people, our safeguarding
officer can be contacted via the office.
STALLIONS All competitors are reminded to allow stallions and their handlers enough space for safety. Whilst it is
the responsibility of the owner that any entire horse brought onto the showground is totally under control, other
owners, handlers and riders must behave sensibly and allow adequate room for stallions and colts. Stallions must
wear a disc when out of the stables.
DRIVEN TURNOUTS are to keep to the designated areas.
VEHICLE ACCESS – Follow signs into the lorry park. Please park tidily to allow others adequate room. No horses can
be tied to the side of lorries / trailers due to limited space
PARKING only in designated areas, spaces for Disabled Drivers will be marked, but please contact the organisers if
disabled parking is required.
PHOTOGRAPHER – Only the official show photographer will be allowed in the ring during any class. This year's
photographer will be Real Time Images and all photos can be viewed and purchased from
www.realtimeimagimg.co.uk
Showing Turnout Rules
Ridden Tack:
● Plain and simple workmanlike tack.
● Saddles should try and show off the shoulder with a discreet numnah if needed.
● Bridles can be a Pelham/double for open, intermediate and restricted classes. Snaffle bridles for novice classes.
In hand Tack:
● Adults: Bridles, in hand bridles with a bit and coupling, or Austrian show halters.
● Youngstock: As above or foal slips
● Coloured browbands are not considered suitable, but brass clencher browbands may be appropriate for inhand
classes i.e. stallions.
Riders:
● All Riders must wear a hard hat to the current approved standard
● Tweed jacket, shirt with collar and tie.
● Beige, buff, canary jodhpurs.
● Long riding boots or jodhpur boots for juniors
● Brown gloves, showing cane not exceeding 30” (75cms).
● For the ladies, hair neatly and securely tied in a hairnet.
THE USE OF SPURS IS NOT PERMITTED IN ANY RIDDEN SHOWING CLASS.
In hand handlers:
● Tweed jackets/waistcoats. Shirt with collar and tie. Trousers and short boots.
● Riding hat (strongly advised) or other appropriate headwear, eg bowler, trilby, cap, panama.
● Gloves/Showing cane not exceeding 30”
● Schooling and dressage whips are not permitted.
Horses:
● Should be shown in their natural state with free manes and tails. Subtle trimming is permitted of the jaw line
and heels.
● Hoof oil where used should be natural/clear.
● Quarter marks and plaiting are not permitted.
● The elements judged in a showing class are manners, conformation, type and way of going.
● The trimming of sensory hair is banned
Style & Performance
● It is correct to wear a hacking jacket in Working Hunter classes with a tie.
● Discrete numnahs that match the colour of your saddle and any suitable bridle.
● Boots are permitted on your horse during the jumping phase but may have to be removed for the
conformation/flat ridden section.
Dressage
● A hacking jacket is considered appropriate for unaffiliated dressage
● You may wear a stock with pin or a tie
● Jodhpurs/breeches should predominantly be of a solid, single colour. Dark-coloured contrast seats are
permitted. Striped or bold patterned breeches/jodphur are not permitted.
● Boots should be long black. If gaiters are worn, they must match the boots.
● You must wear gloves, which may be light or dark, but not brightly coloured
● In Preliminary and Novice tests the horse should be in a dressage legal snaffle bit. From Elementary level, a
double bridle is permitted.
● The horse must not wear boots or bandages.
● Schooling whips are permitted where stated in the rules.
● Spurs are not permitted for competitors 16 years and under
Show Jumping
● In unaffiliated show jumping any jacket may be worn with a stock or tie.
● Jodhpurs/breeches can be cream, beige or canary.
● Hats should be securely fastened with a 3-point harness and can be any colour.
● Any bridle/bitting is permitted and saddles may have a numnah.
● Spurs may be worn (for riders over 16 years of age) but whips should be short.
● Boots on the horse are permitted.
● It is advisable that a body protector is worn
Driving – Dress, safety, and whips
● The dress of Driver and Grooms must conform to the style of the Carriage and harness used.
● Jackets or national dress, driving aprons, hats and gloves are obligatory for drivers.
● Grooms must wear jackets or national dress, hats and gloves
● In Cones, Grooms must remain seated or stood in their proper positions between the start line and the finish
line
● At all times, whilst on a carriage, Driver and Grooms under the age of 18 must wear a body /back protector and
a securely fastened Protective Headgear
5● The Driver must carry a driving whip of traditional style. The lash, which may be tied to the stick, must be
capable of release, and must be long enough to reach all the Horses.
● All drivers must carry a whip in hand, in showing classes.
● If a Driver drops or puts down his whip, between start and finish of a cone driving, or if it is not held in the
hand, penalty points will be incurred.
Trec
● No artificial aids (eg whips or spurs) are allowed
● Striking your horse with rope or hand is not allowed
● Running martingales are allowed in ridden classes
● Wear Gloves and Riding hat is compulsory in all classes
● Body protectors are strongly recommended
● Show gear is not required.
● Handlers must avoid using any method that breaks the pace eg giving treats.
● A soft headcollar or halter for in-hand is preferred. A bridle is allowed but please note that as trec is marked
positively, anything giving you an unfair advantage over another eg: Bits, Chain type halter/dually etc will not be
marked as positively as a soft headcollar and rope! BUT if you feel safer please use them!!
Entering
1. It is a condition of entry that all competitors, families and employees abide by the show rules.
2. All horses entered must be registered with the Haflinger Society of Great Britain, within the stud book Section1, classes 1-4, and be
owned or on long-term loan or lease to a member of the society.
3. All competitors in the ridden, driven, junior/novice handler classes must be a fully paid -up member of the Haflinger Society of Great
Britain. Entries will not be accepted from non-members with the exception of handlers in the In-Hand Breed classes and grooms in
the driven, but the owner must be a member.
4. All horses must be accompanied by a valid passport. Passports must be presented to the secretary at the beginning of the show.
5. Vaccinations for flu and tetanus must be up to date for all horses at the show, and they will be checked upon arrival.
6. You agree to maintain appropriate insurance for yourself and anyone who is allowed to ride/handle your horse for public liability that
may attach to you as the keeper of the horse.
7. No horse under the age of four years may be ridden on the showground.
8. Please be mindful of the number of classes you enter each day, the welfare of horse and rider must be paramount.
9. No Horse to be administered any medical substance without evidence of an accompanying letter from a Veterinary practice verifying
treatment course. Random testing will be undertaken if thought appropriate.
10. Entries received after the close of entries date will be required to pay the stated surcharge before they are allowed to compete.
11. Reimbursements of entry fees will only be considered if a doctors or vets’ letter is supplied, and the show secretary is notified at least
14 days prior to the show. Efforts will be made to sell surplus evening meal tickets, but this cannot be guaranteed. An administration
fee of £15 will be deducted from any refunds given.
12. All trophies are perpetual and remain the property of the Haflinger Society of Great Britain. Trophies must be professionally machine
engraved at the winner’s expense before returned. Trophies taken home are the responsibility of the person who signed for them up
to a maximum value of £100. Trophies awarded at the Breed Show must be returned in time for the following year’s Breed show.
Failure to adhere to the rule will result in any subsequent trophies awarded in the forthcoming year to that
owner/rider/handler/driver/producer remaining with the Society during that year. Please be aware that the Society will take action to
retrieve trophies not returned.
13. Should any trophy awarded to you require repairs or replacement please contact the show organisers who will advise on further
action to be taken. Our trophies represent many years of history both in terms of horses and people. We ask that you respect this and
keep any trophies awarded to you safe and carefully stored or displayed.
14. The Shows Steering Group reserves the right to cancel, combine or divide classes.
15. Pickering Grange Equestrian Centre reserves the right to cancel, add or to amend any of the Competitions as they see fit due to
weather conditions etc.
Competing
1. All competitors must be ready to enter the ring when called; the judge reserves the right to refuse entry to latecomers. If you are
delayed in another class, you must send a representative to the ring steward of your next class explaining your position. Please note
that classes may be held ahead of the time displayed in the Secretary’s Office but will not be held for late entries. Please listen to any
form of announcements during the day in case the class time changes. You are responsible for being at the right place at the right
time.
2. The judges' decision is always final.
3. Any horse or driven turnout not sufficiently under control or considered unsafe shall be removed from the ring immediately at the
request of the judge. Driven turnouts are required to keep to designated areas.
4. A junior or young rider competitor must be able to provide proof of age to the organisers should there be any doubt as to his/her
eligibility to enter a class. Ages will be taken from the day of the show. A responsible adult, who must be named on the entry form,
must accompany juniors. The minimum age for juniors is 8yrs old.
75. Any competitor wishing to make a protest, in relation to any horse exhibited at the show must make the same in writing, to the Show
Secretary, within thirty minutes of the class being judged and deposit the sum of £25 which may, at the discretion of the Show
Steering group, be forfeited to the Society fund if the objection is disallowed.
6. No competitor/rider shall allow a stallion/colt for which they are responsible as owner, lessee, authorised agent or rider to compete
or be prepared to compete, in any competition without taking adequate precautions to ensure competitors, officials or other
members of the public are not at risk of injury. No stallion may be ridden on the showground or in competition by children under the
age of 14 years.
7. Whips are not to exceed 30”/75cms in length in any class except dressage or when riding side-saddle. Misuse of a whip will not be
tolerated, and judges will be asked to notify the Show Secretary of any such incidents, whether in or out of the arenas. Persisted
offenders may be excluded from the show.
8. Once the class has started no change of rider or handler will be allowed.
9. Junior riders 16 years old and under must wear back protectors when jumping. It is recommended that all riders wear back protectors
in jumping classes.
10. The wearing of spurs is forbidden for riders 16 years and under in all classes.
11. Martingales are not allowed in any ridden class.
12. All competitors/riders must wear correctly fastened hats to current approved safety standards. The only exception is in the
Side-Saddle class and those riding side-saddle concours D’Elegance. The wearing of Beaglers IS NOT permitted in any class regardless
of the experience of the rider/handler.
13. Correct riding and driving attire must be worn in the ring when competing, or in the case of handlers, grooms and dressage/ riding
test callers, correct stable dress may be worn. The steward may refuse entry to anyone not properly attired.
14. The show Committee/judge reserves the right to ask a competitor to be removed from the ring, if the horse is unfit for competition
through lameness, stress or fatigue.
The Show Ground
1. By competing at Pickering Grange you are agreeing to their terms and conditions. Please make yourself aware of these by visiting

2. Neither Pickering grange Equestrian, nor any of its representative or staff or Society shall be held liable for any accident, injury or
damage or loss whatsoever, caused to any person, animal or property at any time.
3. Please note that we do not have the rights of exclusive occupation of the showground, and it is likely that other organisations or
competitions will be held on the day. We ask that you abide by all the rules and ask that you always uphold the reputation of the
Haflinger Society.
4. Stables may only be occupied by those who have booked and prepaid for them with show entries and allocated by the Show
Secretary. you may request stables adjacent to friends on your entry form, No change of allocated stable is permitted without the
approval of the show secretary. Owners stabling their horses on the showground accept liability for any damage caused to their
stable(s).
5. All stables will be inspected on departure, the stable is left in a clean and tidy state, with clean bedding banked across the back.
Failing to leave the stable clean, tidy and with banks as found will incur a £50 penalty charge to the person to whom that stable was
allocated.
6. You are responsible for any damage caused by you or your horse.
7. All areas of Pickering Grange must be left clean and tidy. PLEASE dispose of your litter thoughtfully in bins provided.
8. Please do not muck out into the carparks and keep walkways and general showgrounds clean by POO-PICKING regularly.
9. No horse can be tied to the side of lorries/trailers in the lorry park and not on the outside of the stables at any time.
10. Smoking/e-cigarettes are only permitted in designated areas and prohibited elsewhere. There is an area near the toilets where
cigarette disposal bins are provided.
811. Only Alcohol purchased from Pickering Grange can be consumed on the premises. Exceptions have been made to allow alcohol to be
consumed but only in private lorries and tents - No own alcohol outside of these areas.
12. All dogs must be kept on leads. If dog owners do not clean up their own dog’s mess, this privilege will be removed. No dogs allowed
in the stable area/block.
13. All horses and ponies must walk through areas shared with pedestrians.
14. Lunging is only allowed in the Lunge Arena and not in the indoor arenas or the large outdoor arenas. All arenas can be booked
directly with Pickering Grange but only if these are outside the times of the Haflinger Show.
15. Children must always be under adult supervision.
16. For those staying overnight, Pickering Grange normally locked the gates from approx. 9.00pm to 7.30am. Please make sure you
contact the organisers if you wish to exit or arrive between these times.
Horse Welfare
The law requires that you must take reasonable steps to ensure your horse/pony:
1. Has a suitable environment to live in.
2. Has a healthy diet.
3. Can behave normally.
4. Has appropriate company.
5. Is protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease.

At all stages during the training, riding and competing of horses/ponies, welfare must take precedence over all other demands.
1. Training methods - ponies/horses must only undergo training that matches their physical and emotional capabilities
and level of maturity for their respective disciplines.
2. Farriery and tack - foot care and shoeing must be of a high standard. Tack must be designed and fitted to avoid pain and
injury.
3. Transport - during transportation horses/ponies must be fully protected against injuries and other health risks. Vehicles
must be safe, well ventilated, maintained to a high standard and driven competently.
4. Transit - all journeys must be carefully planned, and horses/ponies allowed regular rest periods with access to
food/water in line with current FEI guidelines.
5. Microchipping of all horses/ponies is a legal requirement in the UK as of October 2018. It will become mandatory in
October 2020 (England), February 2021 (Wales) and March 2021 (Scotland).
6. Horses must be fit and competent for their required level.
7. No horse/pony showing symptoms of disease, lameness or other significant ailments should be ridden or compete
when to do so would compromise its welfare.
8. Pregnancy - mares can compete up until their third trimester.
9. HSGB encourages all those involved in the riding and training of horses/ponies to attain the highest possible levels of
education relevant to their aims/disciplines
